Visiting the Moscow Kremlin: Tickets, Entrances and Timing

The Moscow Kremlin is not one single museum ticket. A first visit becomes much clearer when you decide whether your priority is Cathedral Square, the Armoury Chamber or both, then follow the entrance and session instructions for that product.

Current notice checked 23 October 2026: the official museum site says access to Cathedral Square and entry through Kutafya Tower will be unavailable until 12:00 on 24 October, and the Kremlin territory and museums will be closed on 28 October. Always read the notice on the official homepage before setting out.

First choose what you want to see

Cathedral Square and the Kremlin grounds

This is the architectural route for the historic cathedrals and the central ensemble. The official museum site currently lists the Cathedral Square museums from 10:00 to 17:00, closed on Thursdays. Temporary closures and ceremonial restrictions can affect access.

The Armoury Chamber

The Armoury is the museum treasury, with state regalia, ceremonial objects, coaches, arms, jewellery and diplomatic gifts. Admission is session-based. The official site currently lists the museum from 10:00 to 18:00, closed on Thursdays, with sessions shown at 10:00, 12:00, 14:30 and 16:30. Treat these as current information, not a permanent promise.

Both in one day

It is possible for many visitors, but do not build a rushed sequence around a timed Armoury session. Check what each ticket includes, leave time for entry control and decide which collection matters more if your day is short. The Diamond Fund has its own visiting arrangements; never assume it is included merely because it is located in the same complex.

Buy only through the official museum channel

The Moscow Kremlin Museums ask visitors to buy through tickets.kreml.ru or the official ticket office in Alexander Garden. The museum warns against unofficial sellers. Online availability, concessions and document requirements should be checked for your exact date and visitor category.

The official ticket page says an Armoury ticket includes access to the Armoury Chamber and the Kremlin territory. The museum FAQ also answers that you do not need a separate site ticket merely to visit the Armoury. This does not mean that every Cathedral Square museum or separate exhibition is automatically included: read the exact product description before payment.

Timed-ticket habit: keep the booking confirmation, visitor names and session time together. The official homepage recommends allowing for queues and exchanging a voucher at least 45 minutes before the session when an exchange is required.

Kutafya or Borovitskaya: use the entrance named for your ticket

The official museum guidance currently directs visitors entering the Kremlin territory through Kutafya Tower and visitors going to the Armoury Chamber through Borovitskaya Tower. These entrances are not the same place. Check the live notice, because special arrangements may change the flow.

  1. Save the official ticket and the entrance name offline.
  2. Go to the Alexander Garden area with enough time for orientation and security.
  3. Do not rely on “Red Square” as a precise meeting point.
  4. If you have limited mobility or need assistance, contact the museum before the visit and follow its current instructions.

Plan the city journey with our Moscow Metro guide. A route planner can bring you near the Kremlin; the museum instructions determine the final entrance.

A calm first-visit plan

If the Armoury is your priority

Choose a session, arrive early enough for ticket formalities and security, and avoid placing another fixed-time attraction immediately before it. After the visit, continue only if your ticket and the day’s access rules allow the route you planned.

If architecture is your priority

Choose Cathedral Square, allow time to enter the cathedrals without racing and check whether any building is temporarily unavailable. Religious and state spaces deserve a quieter pace than a checklist of photographs.

If you have half a day

Select one primary museum experience and one flexible walk outside the walls. Alexander Garden and nearby central streets give you room to adjust if entry takes longer than expected. Red Square is adjacent to the Kremlin but is not the museum entrance itself.

The Ivan the Great Bell Tower, Kremlin Park route and Archaeological Museum were listed as temporarily closed when this guide was reviewed. Check their status rather than planning around an old blog post.

What to prepare before you leave the hotel

  • Your official ticket or voucher and any document required by its terms.
  • The session time and exact entrance saved offline.
  • A small, manageable bag; check the museum’s current security and cloakroom rules.
  • A charged phone, but also a written hotel address and meeting point.
  • Weather-appropriate clothing for the outdoor sections between buildings.

Photography rules can vary by room or exhibition. Follow the signs and staff instructions instead of assuming that a phone camera is permitted everywhere. Do not bring prohibited objects, and leave extra time for screening.

Moscow Kremlin visit questions

Is the Kremlin the same as Red Square?

No. They are adjacent but distinct. Museum entry follows the entrance instructions on the official Kremlin Museums site and your ticket.

Is the Armoury included with Cathedral Square?

Do not assume so. Choose the correct official product and read what it includes. The Armoury is session-based and has its own entry arrangement.

Is Thursday a good day to visit?

The official site currently lists Thursday as the closing day for both the Armoury Chamber and Cathedral Square museums.

Can I buy from a reseller?

The museum explicitly asks visitors to use tickets.kreml.ru or its ticket office. Use the official channel and verify the domain before paying.

How early should I arrive?

The official homepage recommends planning around possible queues and, where voucher exchange is required, doing it at least 45 minutes before the session. Add your travel and security margin.

Turn the museum into part of a realistic day

Combine one timed priority with flexible walking time, not several appointments that collapse after the first queue.
