Landmarks

Red Square

Historic centre· Allow 1–2 hours

Begin with the city’s best-known square. Look for Saint Basil’s colourful domes, the Kremlin walls and the GUM shopping arcade. Outdoor access can change for official events; check arrangements before setting out.

Pause at the southern end to take in Saint Basil’s domes, then turn back towards the long frontage of GUM. The square is a place to look around slowly, rather than a single attraction to tick off. For a rewarding first outing, pair its monumental scale with the river views at Zaryadye; book any cathedral or museum visit as a separate part of the day.

Local notes & transport

Metro: Okhotny Ryad / Ploshchad Revolyutsii

Combine with Zaryadye rather than crossing the city.

Zaryadye Park

Historic centre· Allow 1–2 hours

A contemporary landscape beside the historic centre, with river views and the cantilevered floating bridge. A good outdoor stop after Red Square. Individual venues and paid attractions have their own arrangements.

Come here for the contrast: old Moscow on the horizon, contemporary park design underfoot and the river opening out below. Walk towards the viewpoints, then choose a quieter path back. It works especially well as the breathing space in a historic-centre day. The bridge viewpoint is a sightseeing stop; allow extra time if you also want to enter a venue in the park.

Local notes & transport

Metro: Kitay-gorod

Take the riverside route and leave time for the viewpoints.

Tretyakov Gallery, Lavrushinsky Lane

Zamoskvorechye· Allow 2–3 hours

Make the historic gallery your introduction to Russian art, then explore the quieter lanes south of the river. Choose the correct building when booking: the museum has several venues.

Russian portraits, landscapes and stories make this more than a rainy-day alternative. Choose a few rooms or artists to spend time with instead of trying to rush the whole collection. After the visit, leave time for the neighbourhood around Lavrushinsky Lane. The historic gallery and the institution’s other venues are different destinations, so match the address to your booking.

Local notes & transport

Metro: Tretyakovskaya

Book for the collection and venue you actually want to see.

Gorky Park

Yakimanka· Allow 2–3 hours

A relaxed change of pace along the river. Combine park paths and embankments with a café stop. Outdoor plans depend on weather and daylight; allow a shorter visit in cold or wet conditions.

A park day gives Moscow a gentler rhythm: open paths, a river walk and time to sit down rather than move between monuments. Choose a comfortable out-and-back walk before you start, especially in winter. The main entrance and the embankment are useful orientation points, but park paths and access can change; use the official park map for the approach you intend to take.

Local notes & transport

Metro: Park Kultury / Oktyabrskaya

Keep an indoor alternative for poor weather.

Access update · 20 October 2026: improvement works affect parts of the Parterre and the main entrance. Use the official park map to choose an open approach; do not rely on the entrance shown in the photograph.

Bolshoi Theatre area

Historic centre· Allow 30–60 minutes outside

Theatre Square makes an easy stop on a walk through central Moscow. Seeing the exterior is a separate activity from attending a performance; use the theatre’s official programme for tickets and venue details.

Look up at the portico, then step back to see how the theatre opens onto the square. Even without a performance ticket, the area makes an atmospheric part of a central walk. If an evening at the theatre is your priority, plan dinner and transport around it, and check the exact stage shown on the official booking.

Local notes & transport

Metro: Teatralnaya

Check the stage and start time on your ticket.

Neighbourhoods

Old Arbat

Arbat· Allow 1–2 hours

Walk the pedestrian street and branch into its side lanes for a different view of the neighbourhood. Pair it with nearby central sights rather than treating every stop as a separate metro journey.

Old Arbat is best enjoyed with small detours: look beyond the souvenir windows, notice the façades and take a side lane when it catches your eye. Build in a café break rather than treating the street as a quick passage. Old Arbat and New Arbat have very different characters; check the full address when arranging a meeting.

Local notes & transport

Metro: Arbatskaya / Smolenskaya

Leave time for the lanes, not only the main street.

Moscow City

Presnensky· Allow 1–2 hours

See the city’s glass-and-steel skyline from the riverside, then choose whether to visit a viewing deck. Towers and viewing attractions use separate entrances and tickets.

The skyline introduces another Moscow: reflective towers, bold silhouettes and a riverfront perspective. Start outside to enjoy the architecture before deciding whether an observation deck belongs in your day. A clear view matters more than a particular hour; compare visibility and the attraction’s ticket terms. Use the exact tower entrance for a booked visit.

Local notes & transport

Metro: Delovoy Tsentr / Moscow-City

Check visibility before paying for a high-level viewpoint.

Zhivopisny Bridge viewpoints

North-west Moscow· Allow a half-day with travel

The red arch bridge offers a striking contrast to the historic centre. This is an outlying photo stop, best planned separately with a verified walking approach and return journey.

The bridge’s red arch is a striking subject for visitors interested in contemporary engineering and city photography. Give it a separate outing rather than adding it to a tightly packed central day. Plan a public viewing spot, a safe walking approach and the return journey. The map point identifies the structure, not a recommended pedestrian access route.

Local notes & transport

Metro: Plan a separate journey

Do not try to fit this into a one-day central walking route.

PUT YOUR PLANS INTO PRACTICE

Make a good city day

Red Square & Zaryadye

Combine the square with the park and river viewpoints. Treat the Kremlin museums, Saint Basil’s Cathedral and the outdoor square as separate visits: admission and access arrangements differ. Keep the park as a flexible outdoor stop and check any ticketed exhibition separately.

Tretyakov & the south bank

Give the gallery its own unhurried visit, then walk in the surrounding neighbourhood if the weather suits. Confirm the exact gallery building on your ticket; the Tretyakov Gallery has more than one venue. Do not plan an exhibition using only the institution’s name.

Bolshoi & the theatre district

An exterior visit fits into a central walking day. A performance needs a separate booking: check the stage, start time, seat and entry conditions directly with the theatre. A photograph outside is not a theatre tour.

Arbat, Moscow City & Zhivopisny Bridge

Arbat works as a neighbourhood walk; check whether an address refers to Old Arbat or New Arbat. Give Moscow City a separate stop and confirm the tower for any observation-deck booking. Zhivopisny Bridge is farther from the centre: plan the return and choose a public viewpoint rather than treating the map marker as a visitor entrance.
